Danny Yates

The Southern Golf Association Hall of Fame was established in 1972 by the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association. The following qualifications were established as criteria for nomination of an inductee, but an inductee does not have to meet every single criteria. The candidate must have: 1) Outstanding competitive career; 2) Outstanding administrative contributions; 3) Outstanding promotional contributions; 4) The candidate must have met the above criteria while a member of a Southern Golf Association Member Club. The Southern Golf Association Hall of Fame is unique in that it does not necessarily induct a member each year, nor does it select multiple inductees.

The 1993 inductee for the SGA Hall of Fame was P. Daniel Yates, III, of Atlanta, Georgia, better know as Danny. The family name of Yates has been synonymous with outstanding golf for a long number of years, not only in the southeast but across the nation.

Following graduation from high school, Danny attended the University of Georgia, where he made honorable mention All-American in 1971. In 1972 he was co-captain of the Bulldog Golf Team.

The significant part of Danny's golf career really started in 1974, when he won the Southern Amateur Championship at the Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Florida. Also in 1974, he was the runner-up in the North-South Amateur Chanmpionship at Pinehurst, North Carolina. Danny was Georgia State Amateur Champion in 1977 and again in 1989. In 1988, he was runner-up in the U. S. Amateur Championship at Hot Springs, Virginia. Following the U.S. Amateur, Danny was invited to represent the United States on the World Amateur Team.

Danny played on the Walker Cup Team twice, in 1989 and again in 1993. An amazing feat is the fact that he reached the semi-finals of the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship four straight years, 1989-1992, before winning the championship in 1992.

Danny Yates is not just an outstanding golfer, but is a person who has given of his time and talents back to golf. He has been a Director of the Georgia State Golf Association since 1981, with a particular interest in junior golf. This is substantiated by his being a member of the USGA Junior Committee since 1985.

Danny Yates is not only a tremendous golfer, but a true gentleman as well. He rightfully and deservedly joins a group of outstanding individuals as a member of the Southern Golf Association Hall of Fame.
