Norway’s Viktor Hovland Named Southern Golf Association’s Amateur of the Month for April 2019

BIRMINGHAM, AL (May 20, 2019) – Viktor Hovland has been named SGA Amateur of the Month Presented by Global Golf Post for April 2019 by the Southern Golf Association (SGA).

The Oslo, Norway native and current junior at Oklahoma State University is the reigning U.S. Amateur Champion. In April, Hovland finished T32 at the Masters Tournament with a 72-hole score of 285, three-under par. Hovland is the fourth Oklahoma State University player to earn the Low Amateur title at the Masters and the first since Casey Wittenberg tied for 13th place in 2004.

In other April action, Hovland finished second at the Big 12 conference championship at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Hovland closed with a one-over 71 to finish 7-under 203 one shot behind Texas Christian University’s Hayden Springer.

Hovland is currently the number one ranked Amateur in the World in both the Scratch Players World Amateur Rankings (SPWAR) and the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).

Winners of the SGA’s monthly award are determined by an international panel of golf officials, coaches and journalists. Now in its 14th season, notable recipients have been Bill Haas, Michelle Wie, Hunter Mahan, Ryan Moore, J. B. Holmes, Webb Simpson, Rhys Davies, Kyle Stanley, Kevin Fortin-Simard, Rickie Fowler, Danny Lee, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Alice Hewson, and more recently Jovan Rebula and Jennifer Kupcho.

The SGA supports amateur golf at the highest level, including staging of the storied Southern Amateur, as well as the Southern Junior Championship.
